LOCAL SPORTS: PA bowlers earn state berths, Neah Bay defeats PA girls, Sequim girls and PC get wins

PORT ANGELES — Another busy weekend of high school and NWAC sporting events took place with several major headlines.

The Roughriders bowling team continued their Cinderella season placing 5th at the district tournament with the team missing state by just 9 pins. Abby Robinson and Paige Pangro both qualified for State individually. The State Bowling tournament will take place Friday in Tukwila.

If basketball aficionados at Roughrider Gymnasium did not know what all the fuss was about the #1 ranked Neah Bay Red Devils, they do now! The small, 1B school with 100 kids in the high school blew out the Roughriders Saturday 60-41. The young Red Devils who lost the state championship game last year played only one senior and has a roster made up of several 8th graders and Freshman plus their big inside gun Ezrah Ray has been out all season with a knee injury but is expected back this week. The Red Devils jumped out to a 16-7 1st quarter lead and led 35-15 at the half. Roughrider Anna Petty like she has all season was spectacular in leading the Roughriders with 21 points. But with the Roughriders scoring just 43 points per game and the Red Devils scoring 59 points per game, it was going to take a great defensive performance to keep up with running Red Devils who turned nearly every Roughrider turnover into a layup. The next highest scorer for the Roughriders was Lexie Smith with 6 points. Senior Allie Greene had 16 for Neah Bay, Amber Swan was a force all night in the paint with 15 points. Junior Ryana Moss had 12 points. Moss is the younger sister of Ruth Moss who plays at Peninsula College. Older sister Cherish is the Red Devil head coach and along with younger sister Ciera won a NWAC Championship for Allison Crumb at Peninsula.

The Roughriders play at Kingston Tuesday night and have the big game at Sequim on Thursday night.

The 2nd-ranked Sequim girls blew out Kingston 72-28. Jolene Vaara led the way with 18 points. Bobbi Mixon has been coming on and scored 14 points and Jelissa Julmist hit for 12 points.

The Wolves hit the road tomorrow for Silverdale to take on Olympic. The game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.

In NWAC action the great times continue to roll as the 2nd-ranked Pirate men beat a good Edmonds squad 78 -75. Roosevelt Williams Jr led the way with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Malik Jackson hit for 19 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. MAX D’Amato hit for 13 points and Esa Onakpoma had 12 points. The Pirates are now 19-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

It was an easy day for the 5th-ranked Pirate women as they blew out Edmonds 86-50. Millie Long led the way with 19 points. Ituau Tuisaula had 15 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Jenilee Donovan hit for 13 points. The Women are 12-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play and will play at Everett on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio.
