PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team had an extremely productive and happy weekend. The Roughriders received the great news that senior leader Anna Petty only had a knee bruise from the Sequim game in a play at the end of the game where 3 players fell to the floor, one landing on Petty’s knee.  Petty entered the game Saturday in the 4th quarter against Bainbridge that raised the energy in Roughrider Gym and the Roughriders bench. Petty quickly scored 6 points including a 3-point play were Petty made the layup and was fouled hard into the wall. Petty got up with a big smile on her face and then made the big free throw to help her Roughriders knock off Bainbridge 39-35.

The young gritty Roughrider defense held the Spartans to 10 first half points as the Roughriders led 16-10 at the break. The Roughriders needed someone to step up and replace the 12 points per game Petty usually gets. Roughriders 5’10” Junior Paige Mason had the best game of her career hitting for 13 points. Freshman Lindsay Smith had 8 points and her big sister Lexie had 4 points and had a great day on the boards and a productive game defensively.

The Roughriders end their regular season 11-3 in league play and 11-9 overall. Most of the losses were against teams ranked in the Top 10 in the state as coach Mike Poindexter scheduled a tough non-league schedule which should pay off in a upcoming district tournament that should be up for grabs behind Sequim and will be very competitive.

Four local high school basketball players were named players of the year for their teams and were awarded $50 gift certificates from Firehouse Grill Burgers and Fries. The awards were voted on by the KONP Sports broadcasters. The winners were Vincent Carrizosa and Hannah Bates for Sequim. Parker Nickerson and Anna Petty of Port Angeles. A special Olympic Peninsula Player of the year award winner will be named tomorrow night after the Neah Bay at Sequim girls game. You’ll hear that game on KONP.

The Port Angeles Roughriders and Sequim Wolves bowling teams completed their very successful seasons. The Wolves at the state bowling tournament were represented by Morgan Kaysor and Nikoline Updike. Both Sequim bowlers had an average score of 133 at the tournament. For the Roughriders Abby Robinson finished 19th in the state averaging 162 with a high game of 193. Paige Pangaro averaged 136 with a game high of 171. Roughrider bowling coach Rebecca Gundersen was happy with the Roughriders first season. “We learned a lot during the season and had a successful first year. The post season was a bonus and such a great experience for the girls.”
