LOCAL SPORTS: Tough losses for local baseball, fastpitch, soccer teams

By Oly Archibald

UNDATED — It was a tough day for three of the four local high school fast pitch and baseball teams yesterday.

The Roughrider girls fast pitch team held on to beat Kingston 5-2. Cheyenne Zimmer pitched 4 innings allowing 2 runs and striking out 6. Heidi Leitz came in and earned the save throwing 3 innings without giving up a hit or a run. Roughrider first-year 2nd baseman Kennedy Rognlien again made a statement she should be the Olympic League Freshman of the year by going 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Sophomore Catcher Abby Kimball, also having a great year, hit a double with 3 RBIs.

The Sequim Wolves lost a heartbreaker to Olympic in Silverdale 4-3. The Wolves lead 3-2 at the bottom of the 6th, but Olympic scored 2 runs for the win.

The North Kitsap Vikings are the Olympic League champions. The Roughriders are now in 2nd place with a 9-5 record. Olympic and Sequim are tied for 3rd with 9-4 records.

The Roughriders host #1-ranked North Kitsap on Thursday. That game will be broadcast here on KONP Newsradio. On Friday, the Roughriders will host Sequim on their senior night. There will be no radio broadcast, so Wolves and Roughriders fans need to get out to Dry Creek Field for what should be a great game.

In district playoff baseball action, the 12th-ranked Roughriders simply left too many base runners as they were beaten by 8th-ranked White River 5-3.

In the first inning with hits from Elijah Flodstrom and Cole Acker, a walk by Colton Romero and 2 Hornet errors, allowed two Roughrider runs for a 2-0 lead. However, after the Roughriders retired the first two Hornet batters, two consecutive walks and four hits gave the Hornets a 3-2 lead. The Roughriders earned their 3rd run in the 5th inning when  Romero singled and Flodstrom doubled bringing in Romero to tie the game at 3-3. The Hornets scored 2 more runs in the 5th for the final 5-3 score. Kole Acker pitched 4 1/3 innings striking out 6.

The Roughriders will play #13-seed Franklin Pierce, which beat Sequim 12-2 yesterday eliminating the Wolves, today at Civic Field with the first pitch at 4 pm. Today’s game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio with the Firehouse Grill Burgers and Fries Dugout pre-game show starting at 3:45 pm. The winner will play at 4 pm on Saturday at Foss high school against the winner of #8 seed Olympic and #9 seed Sammamish game. The winner of that game goes on to the state tournament.

The Port Angeles Roughriders boys soccer team season has ended. The Riders lost to Highline yesterday in the district tournament 4-2.

The Riders finished tied for 3rd in league standings with Bremerton and the only Olympic league team that advanced on Tuesday night was North Kitsap. North Mason, Kingston and Bremerton were all eliminated from the District tournament. The Riders lose 11 total seniors and 7 starters who will be missed and hard to replace.

In tennis action the Roughriders are sending a doubles team to district. Cindy Liang and Gwyneth Van Blair placed 4th in the league tournament and will head to the district tournament May 19th and 20th.

Cindy Liang and Gwyneth Van Blair finished 4th in doubles for the Roughrider tennis team. They now advance to the district tournament
