PORT ANGELES — Pack up the lawn chairs and coolers and put on the sunscreen, it is district fast pitch tournament time beginning this Friday in Lacey and the bracket is out. Roughrider fans can make their reservations for Yakima while the Wolves have a much tougher side of their bracket.

The Wolves are the #9 seed and will be three-touchdown favorites over #16 seed Lindberg. The Roughriders are the #7 seed and have a tough one with #2 seed Orting who many softball aficionados think has the best pitcher in the district.

The good news for the Roughriders: If they beat Orting, they qualify for state and would play in a quarter final game at 4 pm. That would be against the winner of the #6 Fife-#3 seed Sammamish game. Sammamish is only a #3 team because, like last year, won a very weak Kingco League. Sequim beat Sammamish 21-3 in 3 innings in last year’s district opener. If the Roughriders did lose to Orting, they would play a weak Sammamish team and then #11 Highline in a loser-out- winner-to-state game. The Roughriders would be favored by two touchdowns in that game.

Sequim on the other hand has a much tougher path to Selah. After the Wolves blow out Lindberg, they will play the loser of the #1 North Kitsap-#8 White River game. If the Wolves get by that one, they will play in a winner-to-state-loser-out game against either #5 Olympic or #4 Enumclaw.

Other 1st round games involving Olympic league teams:  10 am #15 North Mason plays #10 Franklin Pierce. 10 am #12 Kingston vs #13 Tyee. Noon and this should be a great game #5 Olympic vs #4 Enumclaw and at Noon #1 North Kitsap vs #8 White River.

KONP Newsradio will begin broadcasts Friday Morning at 9:45 am with the Firehouse Grill Burgers and Fries Dugout pre-game show. The Sequim – Lindberg game will air at 10 am. At Noon, it will be the Port Angeles-Orting game. At 2 pm, if Sequim wins as expected, KONP will broadcast their game against the loser of the #8 White River – #1 North Kitsap game. That game is a loser out game. If Port Angeles beats Orting, KONP will broadcast that semifinal game at 4 pm.

Then on Saturday morning KONP Newsradio will broadcast the Port Angeles Roughrider State baseball game at WF West in Chehalis.

In Junior Babe Ruth action, Local 155 gave Athletes Choice their 1st loss of the season 5-2. Local 155 pitcher Perry Brandt was on fire, pitching 6 innings with 11 strike outs and giving up just one hit. Closer Bryce Deleon came in the 6th inning to strike out the side and earn the save. For Local 155, Ian Smithson went 3 of 4 scoring 2 runs. Bryce Deleon went 2 for 4. Brandt Perry went 2 for 4 with a triple. Chris Jaynes went 2 for 2 with a double.

The Peninsula Pirates have signed 2 high school athletes to letter of intents. One for the women’s soccer team and one for the women’s basketball team. Allison Crumb has signed another hoop star from the islands in Shania Monahanu a 5’6” point guard out of Punahou High School in Honolulu. Monahanu is aggressive on the dribble drive to the rim and can step out and hit long distance 3s. Monahanu averaged 11 points per game her senior year.

Shania Moananu averaged 11 ppg at Ponahou High School in Honolulu

The women’s soccer team has signed Shawna Larson out of Graham Kapowsin High School.
