UNDATED — The Sequim and Port Angeles track teams are bringing home precious medals at the district track meet. Plus, there is an amazing 8th grader at Sequim Middle School that already ranks as one of the best high jumpers in the state.
First, Andrew Brown of Sequim has his bags packed for the state track meet. Brown placed 1st in the 110-meter hurdles and first in the high jump. Basketball star Jolene Vaara is district champion in the long jump. Sequim placed 2nd in the 4×200 Relay with Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Katie Morris, Ivy Barrett and Jolene Vaara. Sean Southand placed 6th in the 400 meters. Ivy Barrett placed 1st in the 400 meter, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader placed 4th and Samara Holshouser placed 6th.

Sequim Wolves Sophomore Libby Turella made plenty of noise helping her Wolves basketball team to a 4th place State finish. However big sister Libby might have to share some of the spotlight with little Sister Clare an 8th grade middle schooler, although a 5’9″ 8th grader is hard to call little. Clare broke the Sequim Middle School high jump record with an amazing jump of 5’2”. The old record was 4’10”. The 5’2″ jump by Clare would make her one of the top high school high jumpers in the state.

8th grader Clare Turella of Sequim is already a record setting high jumper
By the way, Clare also carries a 4.0 GPA. It’s going to be fun for Wolves fans to watch Clare jump for gold medals over the next 4 years.

The Sequim Wolves fast pitch team will open district play Friday morning against Lindbergh with the first pitch at 10 am in a game you can hear on KONP Newsradio.
Lindbergh, the #16 seed who has a state ranking of 36, finished 3rd in a Kingco league that last year simply could not compete at the tournament. Sequim beat the Kingco champions Sammamish 23-1 in 3 innings. Lindbergh has a 7-5 league record and was 8-7 overall. Lindbergh scores 11 runs per game and gives up 9.
The Wolves, the 4th place team in the Olympic League, went 9-5 in league play and 9-7 overall. The Wolves average 9 runs per game and give up 5. The Wolves went 1-5 against the top 3 Olympic League teams beating Port Angeles at home 7-6. Utility infielder junior Taylee Rome has had a huge season at the plate hitting 590 with 22 RBIs and 3 home runs. Senior Mia Pozernick is also having an all-league season hitting 480 with 6 HRs and 26 RBIs. Lexie King is hitting 490 with 12 RBIs. Sophomore catcher Mikki Green is hitting 450. Short stop Hannah Bates is hitting 450 with 12 RBIs. Pitcher Laney Vig has been outstanding, striking out 65 for the season.
The Wolves, in a tough bracket, can make the trip to state. They will be big favorites in this game against Lindbergh. If #1 seed North Kitsap takes care of #8 seed White River, the Wolves will take on a Hornet team that has a state ranking lower than themselves. If the Wolved take care of White River, they will play the loser of #4 seed Enumclaw and #5 seed Olympic for a trip to state. The Wolves have the pitching and defense to beat both those teams. The key will be to get rid of their “Seattle Mariner syndrome” of not putting together clutch hits with runners on Base. The Wolves have 8 veteran seniors who know what it takes to get to Selah!
