Public comment period opens June 1 for “log yard” toxic cleanup

PORT ANGELES – The Washington Department of Ecology is seeking public comment on cleanup documents for the Terminals 5 6 & 7 Uplands site on the Port Angeles waterfront.

The comment period is from June 1 to July 3 for public review of cleanup documents for the site, which is located along Marine Drive, and generally known as the log yard.

The Port of Port Angeles owns the land and has entered into a legal agreement with Ecology as the potentially liable party at the site.

Although the full extent of contamination at the site is not known, the history of the activities at that location includes mill operations, wood processing, a hog fuel boiler, and large storage tanks of fuel oil and ammonia.

Potential toxins needing cleanup include petroleum hydrocarbons, dioxins, furans, PCPs and TeCPs.

It’s also been noted that, based on the long history of Tribal presence around the harbor, there is a high probability of cultural resources in the study area, which will limit the investigation and cleanup activities that would disturb the ground. Ecology is coordinating with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe on that issue.

More information about the site and the comment period are in the fact sheet included with this story on our website.

Ecology said in a statement they will consider public comments submitted between June 1 and July 3 and if there are no changes, the Port will likely begin coring and other activities this summer. You may see some workers in drilling trucks installing wells near the shoreline and conducting surveys.
