PORT ANGELES – The City of Port Angeles is about to offer its residents free trees as part of the launch of the “City Shade” Street Tree Program.
The program is the brainchild developed by community member Paul Forrest in partnership with the City. The free trees can be planted on private properties and within the City right-of-way.
Approximately 100 trees grown at the City Shade Nursery will be available for planting in October. The species available include English Oak, Golden Rain and Japanese Pagoda Trees.
The point of the City Shade Program is to increase the tree canopy in our community by planting trees in low, medium and high-density residential neighborhoods. The initiative supports the growth of our urban forest and aligns with the City’s long-term sustainability and Climate Resiliency Plan goals.
In August, the City will open the 2023 City Shade Application Period, where City residents can apply for free street trees. Those interested may also apply to volunteer with or donate to the program. Volunteers will be needed to participate in tree-planting events, coordinate neighborhood tree maintenance, and to help out at the City Shade Nursery.
