ANACORTES — The Port Angeles Roughriders 1-0 football team takes on the Seahawks tonight. No, not the Seattle Seahawks; although maybe Seattle should consider taking on the state’s 2nd-ranked Anacortes Seahawks. Anacortes beat the Roughriders 57-0 last year.
While the Roughriders were kicking the Blaine Borderites across the border in a 45-21 blowout last week, Anacortes won 21-7 over Oak Harbor even though the Seahawks turned the ball over 4 times and had 120 yards in penalties. The Seahawks lightning-fast junior tailback Brock Beaner rushed for 151 yards on just 15 carries for an eye-popping 10 yards per carry. Beaner also blocked a punt and took it in for the touchdown.
The Seahawks can also air it out. QB Rex Larson, a 6’0″ 175 lb. senior, threw for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Seahawks throw to Landon Schafer a 6’2 185 lb. senior and Rylin Lang, a 5’11” 175 lb. junior.
For the Roughriders to be competitive and pull off a shock-the-world upset, they will have to run the ball, run the clock, move the chains and keep the Seahawks offense on the sideline.
The Newsradio KONP pre-game show will start at 6:45 following the Mariners baseball game. Kickoff is set for 7 pm Oly Archibald and Bill Bates will have the live play by play. The Roughrider VIP Halftime Show will feature PA tennis coach Brian Gundersen, in his 23rd year, and Jr. Nathan Basden.
Up next for the Roughriders, just a date with the state’s #1 ranked North Kitsap Vikings Friday night at Civic Field.
