LOCAL SPORTS: PA tennis gets another sweep; Sequim readies for big soccer match

PORT ANGELES — Brian Gunderson’s Port Angeles Roughrider tennis team earned their 2nd straight sweep shutting out Olympic 7-0 yesterday. In singles, Nathan Basden won 6-1; 6-0. Matthew Miller won 6-0; 6-0. In doubles action, Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton won 6-2; 6-0. Reid Schmidt and Keatyn Hoch won 6-0; 6-0.

The Roughriders travel to Class 3A state power Bainbridge on Wednesday.

There is a big soccer match in Belfair tonight as the Sequim Wolves open Olympic League play against the North Mason Bulldogs. A lot of eyes will be on the match up of North Mason star Grace Smelcer and Sequim’s Minnesota State- signee Taryn Johnson.

The Wolves are expected to compete against an always tough North Kitsap team and Class 3A power Bainbridge. Kickoff tonight is at 6:45 pm. Johnson and teammate Libby Turella were members of last year’s Wolves basketball team that finished 4th in the state. Turella and Johnson would love to bring the Wolves some hardware in soccer.

The Roughriders will be at home against Kingston with the kickoff at 6:45.

In volleyball action, the Sequim Wolves host North Mason and Port Angeles is at home against Kingston. Both matches start at 6:15 pm.
