LOCAL SPORTS: Stevens opens with football win; plus cross country, soccer tennis and volleyball updates

PORT ANGELES — The Stevens Stampeders football team ran over Forks 18-8 in their season opener.

Stevens opened the scoring when running back Lalo Dominquez scored from 6 yards out for the 6-0 lead with 25 seconds left in the 1st quarter. Forks took the lead on a 79-yard touchdown and 2-point conversion making the score 8-6 Forks at the half.  On two 1st half possessions, Steven’s moved the ball inside the Spartans 10-yard line but came away with no points. The big play of the game came in the 3rd quarter when Stampeders’ outside linebacker Leland Johnston picked off a Forks pass in the flat and went 55 yards for the pick six to make the score 12-6 late in the 3rd quarter.

The Stampeders iced the game late in the 4th quarter when quarterback Kade Acker found a wide-open tight end Jaike Parker for a 55-yard pass play to the Forks 12-yard line. Two plays later Acker found a wide-open Parker in the end zone to make the final score 18-8 Stampeders.

Stampeders return specialist Josh Needham had a kickoff return of 55 yards and a punt return of 40 yards. The Stampeders will play Sequim next Wednesday.

Speaking of the Sequim, they beat Blue Huron in OT 42-36 in Port Townsend. Andy Reynolds scored the winning touchdown. Nolan Bacchus and Clayton Ernst also scored touchdowns.

On Friday night’s Port Angeles-Sequim KONP football broadcast, the “Halftime VIP Show” will be a live interview with Stevens’ QB Kade Acker and the Sequim tight end Andy Reynolds.

In an Olympic League cross country meet in Sequim, the Sequim Wolves finished 2nd and the Roughrider girls finished 5th. For the Wolves Dawn Holstedt finished 3rd out of 62 runners and Kaitlyn Bloomenrader finished 4th. For the Roughriders Leia Larson placed 3rd and Mariam Cobb placed 9th.

In the boys meet the Roughriders placed 4th and the Wolves placed 7th. The highest finish for the Roughriders was Tymer Lytvak in 17th place.

In high school soccer action tonight, the big game is in Sequim where the Wolves and North Kitsap both have 3-0 league records. The Wolves have outscored their 3 league opponents 18-3, the Vikings have outscored their opponents 14-0. Kickoff is at 6:45 pm.

The Roughriders are at home tonight with Olympic with the kickoff at 7:15 pm.

In tennis action Sequim is in Port Angeles with the first serve at 4 pm.

In volleyball action Olympic is at Port Angeles with the first serve at 7:15 pm.

Sequim has a big game at home with North Kitsap with the first serve at 6:15 pm.

In NWAC soccer action the Peninsula Pirate women beat Edmonds 6-0 and the Pirate men won 5-0
