LOCAL SPORTS: NK outkicks Sequim, PA gets another win

By Oly Archibald

SEQUIM — First place was on the line as the state’s 7th ranked 3-0 North Kitsap Vikings washed up on the banks of the Dungeness Valley to invade and conquer another Olympic League soccer title. The 3-0 Sequim High School wolf pack attacked the Vikings in what was as good as a high school soccer game that fans could watch.  The Vikings fought out a hard-earned, 3-2 victory then floated back out to sea for their happy voyage to Poulsbo taking no prisoners! But the Wolves matched the Vikings speed, effort and soccer IQ for the entire game.

The Vikings scored first at the 7-minute mark, but Nikoline Updike scored in the right corner of the net at the 15-minute mark on an assist from Raimy Brewer. Brewer who worked out all Summer in the weight room is solid proof of how hard work can turn a high school under classman into looking like a Junior college athlete.

The Vikings went up 2-1 in the 17th minute for the 2-1 lead. The Wolves tied it up 2-2 at the 35th minute with a goal from Taryn Johnson and an assist from Jenny Gomez.

The Vikings scored the final and game winning goal at the 53rd minute mark.

The Wolves goalie Kalli Grove had two highlight saves. In one in the 2nd half, Grove took a point-blank shot that was fired from a Viking cannon. Grove took the shot to the torso but somehow hung on to the ball. The game was held up for 2 minutes as Grove had the wind knocked out of her from the shot.

The Wolves will host Olympic on Tuesday.

The Roughrider soccer team is now 3-2 with a 6-0 win over North Mason. Izzy Felton scored at the 6-minute mark with an assist from Teanna Clark. At the 14th minute it was Clark with the goal and Felton with the assist for the 2-0 led.

Sophomore Teanna Clark scored 2 goals and an assist to help the Roughriders shut out Olympic 6-0.

At the 20-minute mark it was Paige Mason with a goal with an assist from Kedryn DeScala. At the 56th minute Freshman Morgan Politika scored her first varsity goal to make the score 4-0. At the 75th minute Paige Mason scored her 2nd goal with an assist from Kedryn DeScala. Teanna Clark scored her 2nd goal of the game to make the final score 6-0.

In volleyball action, the Roughriders swept Olympic 3-0, and the Sequim Wolves lost a heart breaker to North Kitsap 3-2.

In tennis, the Roughriders knocked off Sequim 6-1.  All State performer Garrett Little earned the only Wolves win beating Nathan Basden 6-1; 6-0.  Matthew Miller beat Jack Cresilius 6-1; 6-5. C.J. Elliott beat Mason Rapolje 6-2; 6-4-1.  In doubles action it was Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton over William Hughes and Tom Laschet 6-1; 6-4.

Reid Schmidt and Keatyn Hoch beat Lincoln Bear and Hunter Tennell 6-1; 6-1. Austin Worthington and Grant Butterworth beat Sabastian Buhrer and Isaac McKenn 6-0; 6-3. Carter Gundersen and Carston Seibel beat Zach Post and Ryan Stites 6-1; 6-2.

The Roughriders host Bremerton on Monday.

The big rivalry football game between Port Angeles and Sequim takes place tonight at Sequim. The Wolves have won 7 straight games over the Roughriders. The winner of tonight’s game could have a solid shot of making a district playoff spot. The loser will have a tough uphill battle.

You can hear the live action here on KONP Newsradio with the pre-game show starting at 6:05 pm. The Dustin Clark show will lead off followed by the Wolves Locker room Show featuring the Wolves offensive line coach Mike McFarlen. The show will conclude with Wolves’ senior Jack Henniger and junior wide receiver James Mason. The live “Halftime VIP Show” will feature Stevens’ 8th grade QB Kade Acker and Sequim tight end Andy Reynolds. Oly Archibald, Bill Bates and Greg Thomas will have the live play by play.
