Local Sports Update: Soccer, Swimming and Tennis…OH MY!

by Oly Archibald

It was a busy night of high school sports last night in Bremerton where the Sequim Wolves 12th ranked soccer team knocked off Bremerton 5-1. After 2, on-the-edge-of-your-seats close games with North Kitsap and Bainbridge, Wolves fans had a chance to get their breath back. It was the Gomez and Johnson show as Jenny Gomez hit the hat trick with 3 goals and 1 assist. Taryn Johnson scored 2 goals to go with one assist, and Harper Moore had one assist. Wolves goalie Kalli Grove had a shut out until giving up a penalty shot goal in the final seconds. The Wolves are now 5-1 and have outscored their opponents 25-8.

The Roughriders again had a tough time with a very good Class 3A Bainbridge team. Like in their first meeting, the Spartans shut out the Roughriders 5-0. The Roughriders are 3-4 on the season.

In volleyball action Sequim blanked Bremerton 3-0. The Wolves are 4-3 on the season. The Roughriders were shut out by Bainbridge 3-0. The Roughriders are 2-5 on the season.

In Swimming, the Sequim Wolves are 3-0 after beating Bremerton 77-70.

The Roughriders beat Kingston 144-14. The Roughriders won 11 of the 12 events.

Congrats to Harper McGuire who qualified for state in the 500 Free style.

In tennis: the Roughriders swept Olympic 7-0.  In singles action Nathan Basden won 6-1 6-4. Matthew Miller won 6-1 6-2.

In doubles action Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton won 6-1 6-3.

Austin Worthington and Grant Butterworth won 6-0 6-4.

Carter Gundersen and Garrett Buerer won 6-0 6-0.

The Port Angeles Roughrider football team has their biggest game tonight in several years as the Roughriders host the Olympic Trojans. The Trojans blew out the Roughriders last year in a game that was over after one quarter. This Trojan team is 2-2 overall and 0-2 in league play losing to Bremerton 37-36 after leading by 3 touch downs and they were blown out by Bainbridge Friday night 45-3.  The Trojans average 27 points per game and give up 26. The Roughriders also average 27 points per game and give up 30 points per game.

The Trojans are led by running back Chace Webster, a 5’10” 170 lb Sophomore who has rushed for 378 yards on 77 carries for an average of 5 yards per carry and 4 touchdowns. The Trojan Quarterback is Antonio Castorena, a 6’1″ 195 lb Junior. Castorena has completed 47 of 75 pass attempts for a 62% passing percentage, garnering him 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

You can hear the live action right hear on Newsradio KONP with the pre game show at 6:15 pm and the kickoff at 6:30 pm. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the play by play.
