LOCAL SPORTS: Prep bowling, college hoops and a former PA football star up for national award

PORT ANGELES — There is Olympic League bowling action today as Port Angeles travels to North Mason for a 2:45 start.

The Sequim Wolves will host Klahowya at 3 pm. Klahowya has the reputation of being one of the best bowling teams in the state.

Allison Crumb’s 4th-ranked Peninsula Pirate women’s basketball team will kick off their season tomorrow night at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.  Tipoff is at 6 pm and the game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.

Former Port Angeles Roughrider Jim Michalczik, a 1984 grad and now the running game coordinator and Offensive line coach of the Oregon State Beavers is one of the finalists for the Frank Broyles Trophy. The trophy is presented annually to College football’s top assistant coach.

Michalczik is in his 6th year at Oregon State with the Beavers who are ranked 11th in the nation and are taking on 5th ranked Washington on Saturday, a game you can hear on KONP Newsradio.

Michalczik, who played offensive linemen at Washington State University, has also coached at PAC 12 schools Arizona and California. Michalczik won a national championship at Miami in 1991. From 2009 – 2010, Michalczik was the offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders.

Another Oregon State Beaver is former Neah Bay Red Devil QB Rweha Munyagi. Munyagi, a Redshirt Senior wears #8, plays wide receiver and is a special team specialist.
