SEQUIM – Echoing last month’s incident at a Port Angeles City Council meeting, three people using profanity and hate speech called in to Monday night’s Sequim City Council meeting.
The language strongly suggests the callers are white supremacists, and all three were cut off at Mayor Tom Ferrell’s urging.
We asked Mayor Ferrell if he’d like to comment on the incident. He replied via email, “There is nothing more vital than free speech in any open society. However, council rules and decorum would most likely cause the same reaction from me. Debate and forums for such should be welcomed regardless of content.”
City Manager Matt Huish said he and his senior leadership, including Police Chief Sheri Crain and the Mayor, discussed the possibility that they could be next after the Port Angeles event and were ready for it when it happened.
Huish said he’s hoping it was a one-off event and, for now, they’re comfortable with handling it in the same way if the callers try again.
Loni Gores with the Clallam County Commissioners Office told us she was unaware of any such calls coming in at any of their meetings.
