SEATTLE – Students from the Sequim School District were among those attending Thursday night’s world premiere of “The Boys in the Boat” at Seattle’s SIFF Cinema Downtown, the theater formerly known as the Cinerama.

Dozens of students from the Sequim School District joined the movie’s director George Clooney for the premiere, including students from Sequim High School Interact Rotary Club, several of whom created a viral TikTok video that attracted the filmmakers’ attention earlier this year.

Sequim School Superintendent Regan Nickles was also in attendance. We asked her to describe the experience.

“The event was a movie premiere that had all the energy and excitement of a new film, and talent attending, so the students were able to see and hear from George Clooney himself as the Director. And our students who had created the Tik Tok last year were able to meet George Clooney and have a moment of conversation with him.”

Based on the 2013 nonfiction book of the same name by Redmond author Daniel James Brown, the movie retells the inspiring true story of the University of Washington junior varsity rowing team, a group of young men who represented the United States in the 1936 Olympics, challenging the Nazi rowing team on the world stage.

A screening in Sequim, to benefit the Joe Rantz Rotary Youth Fund, will take place tonight.
