LOCAL SPORTS: PA takes hoops, bowling wins; Peninsula splits

PORT ANGELES — It was a busy night for local sports, and we begin with the Roughriders bowling team beating North Mason to go 8-3. Zoey Van Gordon bowled a season high 176.

“Zoey did a great job recording her marks in game one and setting the tempo,” said Roughrider Head Coach Becky Gundersen.

Abby Robinson was close behind throwing a 172. Kenadie Ring, Sophie Constant and Xoey Penn all helped the cause by increasing thier averages. Freshman Caidence Pozcrzycki also aided in the win and throwing her first Turkey. The Riders are now off until January 4th.

In high school basketball action, as expected both Roughrider teams made quick work of the Olympic Trojans. The girls won 59-29 and are now 5-1 on the season.

The Roughrider boys had an easier time with a 82-48 blow out. The Roughriders are now 3-1.

There is a big high school double header tonight as Sequim hosts North Kitsap. The girls tip off at 5:15 and the boys at 7 pm. The Viking boys are a strong favorite to play for the state championship.

In NWAC action last night, the Peninsula Pirate men lost at home to Umpqua 85-74.  The Pirates host Blue Mountain tonight at 7 pm.

In a game you heard here on KONP, the 9th-ranked 5-2 Peninsula Pirates had to grind out a tough 64-62 win over 3-6 Blue Mountain.

The Pirates jumped out to a quick 14-3 lead, but the Timber Wolves pulled to within one at 16-15 after one quarter. The 2nd quarter remained competitive, and the Pirates took a 30-28 lead into the locker room. Blue Mountain outscored the Pirates 19-13 in the 3rd quarter for a 47-43 Timber Wolf lead going into the 4th quarter. The Timber Wolves took their biggest lead of 7 with 7:15 left. Down the wire Jennilee Donovan hit a big 3 point shot with Allie Greene, Lexie Mackey and Shania Moanunu hitting big free throws to ice the win. Moanunu was outstanding hitting for 18 points and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Ciera Agasiva once again seemed to come up with a big play when the Pirates needed it the most. Agasiva hit for 11 points with 2 huge 3-point shots. Jennilee Donovan hit for 9 points and former Sequim Wolf Jelessa Julmist had a solid game with 7 points and 12 rebounds. Australian freshman Lexie Mackey hit for 6 points with all 6 coming from the free throw line. Lexie’s mother flew in from Melbourne to Seattle to Pasco to watch Lexie and spend the holidays with her.
