LOCAL SPORTS: Big weekend for local hoops

PORT ANGELES — It was a big weekend of high school and NWAC basketball.

The Sequim Wolves boys earned a non-league win at home over Clover Park 60-56. The Wolves had balanced scoring from their big 3. Freshman Mason Rapolje led the way with 15 points. Sophomore Solomon Sheppard hit for 14 and Keenan Green hit for 12 points. The Wolves are 3-4 in league play and 8-5 overall. The Wolves have a big home game today against Bainbridge with a 5:15 start.

In NWAC action, the Peninsula Pirates played great at Edmonds coming away with the two wins. In the women’s game after falling behind 9-3 the Pirates went on an amazing 33-3 point run to make the score 36-12 with 6 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. From there the Pirates cruised to the 73-58 win.

Once again it was the former Neah Red Devil Allie Greene coming off the bench and burning the nylon. Greene was 3 of 7 from the 3-point line and hit for 13 points to go with 3 rebounds. Jenilee Donovan the Sophomore out of Barrow Alaska scoffed at the chili 13-degree weather in Edmonds by hitting 3 of 5, 3-point shots from the Arctic Circle. Donovan ironically hit for 13 points to go with 3 rebounds. Point guard Shania Moanunu hit for 12 points pulled down 4 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.  Former Sequim Wolf Jelissa Julmist had her best game in her NWAC career hitting for 11 points pulling down 9 rebounds. Julmist was 7 of 9 from the charity stripe.

Pirates’ sophomore guard Jenilee Donovan from Barrow Alaska on the KONP post game show had no issue with the 13-degree Edmonds chill. Donovan hit for 13 points in the Pirates 73-58 win

The Pirates are now ranked 5th in the NWAC and host Bellevue tomorrow night. The Pirates are 3-0 in conference play and 10-2 overall.

The Pirate men earned a big win over a good Edmonds team 80-78 after Esa Onakpoma put back a rebound in the net with 3 seconds left for the victory.

It was a total team win for the Pirates against a Edmonds team that was averaging 87 points per game. It was the former Port Angeles Roughrider Wyatt Dunning leading the Way. Dunning hit for 20 points to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Dunning was 4 of 6 from the 3-point line.

Guard Javon Ervin had an incredible game hitting for 19 points, dishing out 8 assits, pulling down 6 rebounds and getting 2 steals. Ese Onakpoma hit for 14 points and Antonio Odum hit for 12 points.

The Pirates will host Bellevue tomorrow night.

It’s a big night of high school basketball action tonight with the headliner being the 5th ranked Bremerton Knights at the 12th ranked Roughriders. Both teams are tied for 2nd place in the league with 5-2 records In their first match up, the Roughriders blew a 10-point 4th quarter lead as the Knights using an aggressive full court press came away with the come from behind win. Tip off time is at 7 pm and you can hear that game here on KONP as Oly Archibald and Joe Gladfelter have the live play by play.

The Roughrider girls, now alone in first place, travel to Bremerton where they will be 3 touchdown favorites against the Knights. The tip off is at 7 pm.

The Sequim Wolves have a home double header against Bainbridge. The boys tip off at 5:15 the girls tip off at 7:00.

In high school bowling action yesterday, the Roughriders knocked off Sequim 4-3. The Roughriders finish the regular season in 2nd place with a 10-5 record.

Paige Pangaro rolled a personal best of 211 in game one and Abby Robinson bowled a 173. In game 2, Morgan Kayser rolled a 150 and Skylar Krzwore bowled a 149.

The Roughriders travel to the Olympic league tournament Thursday in Silverdale.
