LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim and PA hoop squads shoring up district tourney seeding

By Oly Archibald

PORT ANGELES – Three weeks from today the district boys basketball tournament starts. With 2 weeks left in league play, teams are trying to position themselves for their highest seeds possible.  And to help you follow that action, KONP will broadcast 8 games in the next 5 days. It begins tonight with a Olympic League double header in Poulsbo as the Sequim Wolves will take on the North Kitsap Vikings.

The Wolves’ girls team 2 weeks ago were the favorites to repeat as Olympic League Champions. The Wolves are now in a close race with Kingston for 2nd place just a half game up on the Buccaneers. The Wolves have to travel to Kingston and Port Angeles. The Roughriders sit on top of the Olympic League standings 2 games ahead of Sequim. The Wolves tip off tonight at 6:30 in a game the Wolves need to find some confidence and get back on the winning track. The Wolves are 6-3 in league and 8-4 overall. The Vikings are 2-6 in league 7-6 overall.

The Wolves’ boys team (3-6; 8-7) will be major underdogs tonight against 4th-ranked North Kitsap (8-0; 11-3). Viking guards Cade Orness, a 6’5″ senior, and 6’3″ senior guard Harry Davies are two of the top players in the state. Both players are averaging around 25 points per game. The Vikings eight league wins have all been blow outs. The boys game tips off at 8:00 tonight. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the live play by play.

The Roughrider girls (7-1; 9-6), who looked like a state ranked team in a big win at Sequim, came home and then beat North Mason 37-26. But the Roughriders were not happy with the way they played. The Roughriders will be 20-point favorites tonight at Olympic and then will have a big game at Bainbridge next Thursday in a game you will hear on KONP. A Roughrider win would clinch at least a share of the Olympic League championship.

The Roughrider boys (6-2; 10-5) will be 4 touchdown favorites at home tonight against Olympic 0-7 3-9. Tip off is at 7:00.

It’s a big NWAC double header for the Peninsula Pirates tomorrow night at Skagit Valley. The 5th ranked women (4-0;11-2) take on an injured and beat up Cardinal team. The Pirate men 3-1 10-8 are also in first place in the Northern conference but take on a very tough Cardinal team that 2-1 17-1.

Both games will be broadcast right here on KONP Newsradio, Oly Archibald and Bill Bates will have the live play by play. At halftime there will be a live interview with former Roughrider pitcher Teagen Clark and former Sequim pitcher Lainy Vig. Clark and Vig are now pitching for the Cardinals’ fast pitch team.
