PORT ANGELES – Old computers, monitors and other electronics are not as easy to dispose of as other kinds of junk, but the fine folks at your local Olympic Kiwanis Club are going to fix that with a one-day e-Waste Recycling event coming up on Saturday, March 23.
Printers, servers, hard drives, cell phones, home electronics, you name it, they’ll likely take it and make sure it’s recycled properly. Donations are requested, and any money raised will be used for funding children’s programs in our community.
The Olympic Kiwanis Club’s Chuck Standley is the man who came up with the idea to work with the company SBK Recycle to make this happen. If you’re planning to bring in an old cell phone or computer, Standley says it’s advised that you have your sensitive information scrubbed from the device in advance.
“Get online or use the internet, and find out how they recommend to do that yourself. And do that, because they’re all different, I think. A lot of different phones have different ways of wiping the information. And so, and then, the same thing with the computers. The safest thing is to take the drive out but, on the other hand, the company we’re dealing with is certified. That’s what they do. I mean, that’s the first thing they do, take information off of the devices that they have in their possession. But for their own peace of mind, try to do it yourself before you give it to us.”
The event happens on Saturday, March 23 in the Civic Field parking lot, 307 Race Street in Port Angeles, from 10am to 2pm.
