LOCAL SPORTS: Peninsula Pirates season ends in NWAC first round

PASCO — The Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball team had their season end yesterday losing to 24-4 Portland 76-49.

The Pirates held the Panther NWAC leading offense 22 points below their average, but the Pirates shot just 28% in the first half and shot an ice cold 23% for the game. The Pirates fought hard throughout and pulled to within 9 points with 15 minutes left, but the Panthers quickly went up by 20 points and the Pirates never threatened again.

Javon Ervin led the Pirates with 12 points. Ese Onakpoma hit for 11 points and Aiden Olmstead had a solid game with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Patrick Odingo had 7 points with 2 3point shots.

Sophomores Ese Onakpoma, Javon Ervin, Aiden Olmstead, Antonio Odum and Wyatt Dunning played their final games as Pirates.

Head coach Bryce Jacobsen and his staff will now hit the recruiting trail hard. Jacobson has solid connections in the Sacramento – Central Valley area as well as Alaska. Jacobson and his staff will look to upgrade the size on the Pirates front line. The Pirates finish the season at 15-15.

The Pirate women will tip off tomorrow at Noon against Centralia. We will have a complete scouting report on the Trailblazers tomorrow morning.

Former Neah Bay Red Devil Allie Greene not only celebrated a 14-0 NWAC Northern Conference Championship but also another State Championship for her Neah Bay girls basketball team

The high school springs sports season kicks off Saturday, and a lot of eyes will be on Sequim freshman high jumper Clare Turella who has a shot at standing on the state podium Memorial Day weekend
