
PASCO — Another great basketball season for the Peninsula Pirates women’s basketball team came to an end Saturday losing to Southern Conference power Umpqua 77-53 in an Elite 8 game at the NWAC tournament in Pasco.
The Pirates did win their sweet 16 game on Friday, destroying Centralia 60-35. In a game that matched up Northern Conference MVPs Shania Moananu of the Pirates and West Conference MVP Madison Gore of Centralia Moananu dominated Gore holding her to just 5 points and just one field goal. Meanwhile Moananu hit for a game high 14 points and had an outstanding floor game. Jenilee Donovan hit for 10 points, Talia Marini hit for 8 points and Ciera Agasiva scored 7 points.
Against 27-4 Umpqua, the Pirates got out to an amazing 26-10 lead. But the River Hawks went on a 18-5 point run and the Pirates led 31-28 at halftime. Umpqua outscored the Pirates 19-4 in the 3rd quarter for a 47-35 Umpqua lead.
Umpqua post Brooklyn Feely, who set a tournament record by scoring 52 points against Yakima, was held to 17 by the Pirates 4 points below her average.
Jelissa Julmist, who scored 14 of her 16 points in the 2nd half, had game-high honors for the Pirates. Lexie Mackey was outstanding with 13 points. Ciera Agasiva and Shania Moananu each had 8 points.
It was the last games as Pirates for Lupe Vaaia, Talia Marini and Jennilee Donovan.
It was an emotional scene outside the Pirate Locker room after the game as a large group of family members and fans greeted and congratulated the Pirates players and staff. Family members from far away as Barrow Alaska, Melbourne Australia and Hawaii flew in to support the Pirates.
Losing just one starter, the Pirates will be heavy favorites to win the Northern Conference again and have a good chance at making it to the final four.

The spring high school sports season is fully underway and the Port Angeles Roughrider baseball team knocked of Sehome 12-8. Shortstop Alex Angevine was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, 2 runs scored and a RBI. Josiah Gooding was 1 for 1 with a double, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Kaleb Mullen was 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs. Rylan Politika was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Colton Romero also had a solid game for the Roughriders.
The Roughriders used 8 pitchers who gave up 8 runs on 6 hits.
The Roughriders open league play tomorrow at Bremerton with the first pitch at 4:15.

The Roughrider soccer team knocked off East Jeferson 3-2.
Matthew Miller opened up the scoring at the 32nd minute mark with the first goal of the season with an Assist from Jacob Weaver. The Roughriders went up 2-0 at the 60th minute on a penalty kick by Matthew Miller. The Roughriders scored their 3rd goal of the game at the 64th minute as Kenyon Anderson scored the first of his career with an assists from Matthew Miller.
The Roughriders host Kingston tomorrow night at 6:45 at Peninsula College.
