Port Angeles Food Bank announces new model for collecting donations

PORT ANGELES – The Port Angeles Food bank has come up with a new way to keep a steady supply of food and monetary donations coming in by partnering with local grocery stores.

You may have noticed colorful barrels popping up in stores across Port Angeles. It’s called the Food Drive of the Month, and it’s been set up with the goal of establishing a centrally located food donation network.

In the wake of the pandemic and a recent relocation of the food bank outside city limits, both food and monetary contributions to the Port Angeles Food Bank have fallen. The current model of giving creates fluctuating inventory levels in The Market, which is the new concept at the food bank, creating an experience that is much more like shopping than just picking up a box of donations. Food Drive Of The Month is designed to create more consistency in donations.

Here’s how it works: Each month, FDOTM shines a spotlight on a key item, providing convenient donation points at participating grocery stores. Barrels will be displayed at the store entry to remind people of the item of the month, and purchased items can be placed in the barrel on their way out of the store.

For instance, January is Healthy Snacks, March is Tuna Drive, May is Pet Food, and so on.

Donation barrels are located throughout Port Angeles at Country Aire, Grocery Outlet, IGS, McPhee’s, both Safeway stores, Walmart, and other locations around town.

Businesses interested in amplifying their brand while visibly supporting the Port Angeles Food Bank are invited to become a barrel sponsor.
