OLYMPIA — The Washington State Department of Ecology is seeking public comments on a pilot project that aims to use seawater to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide. Project Macoma, led by Ebb Carbon, will treat seawater from Port Angeles Harbor to reduce its acidity before returning it to the harbor to absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
The two-year project will involve a barge and onshore facilities at the Port of Port Angeles’ log yard. The Department of Ecology’s role is to ensure the project does not affect harbor water quality.
Ebb Carbon has applied for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit to discharge the treated water. Public comments on the draft permit can be submitted online at https://tinyurl.com/myclallamcounty through Aug. 18.
