Dungeness Spit body identified

By Pepper Fisher

DUNGENESS NATIONAL REFUGE – The identity of the man whose body was found Wednesday morning on the Dungeness Spit was revealed by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon.

The body of 34-year-old Portland, Oregon resident Oleksander Stefanchuk was discovered at 10:50am on the beach about a quarter mile from the Dungeness Lighthouse.

Chief Criminal Deputy Amy Bundy told KONP there is no suspicion of foul play and the Coroner’s Office has successfully made the next of kin notification.

The deceased had no identification on his person, but Bundy said they were able to get their investigation going with the help of an FBI fingerprint scanner. That led to obtaining a Department of Licensing photo and address for the victim, and they were able to locate his family.

Bundy said they are on the lookout for his vehicle, and that the family said Stefanchuk would often disappear for months at a time despite having a fixed residence.

It’s a mystery at this point how he came to be in the water, but Bundy said the Coast Guard has been notified to be on the lookout for a possible boat.
