Three days after lightning storm, crews discover small fire in ONP

PORT ANGELES — A 2.5-acre wildfire sparked by last weekend’s lightning storm has been identified on Maiden Peak in Olympic National Park. The fire, known as the Maiden Fire, has primarily burned in the forest canopy on the northwest side of the peak, with some ground smoldering.

Interagency fire crews report that no structures or trails are threatened, and no new evacuations or closures are in place. Recent rainfall, with more expected, could help extinguish the fire. An update will be provided once the fire’s status is confirmed.

The August 18 lightning storm ignited several fires in both Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. Due to ongoing drought conditions, a campfire ban remains in effect across the Olympic Peninsula. Fire crews will continue monitoring the area, and residents are urged to follow fire restrictions and report any new fires by calling 911.

Meantime, crews continue battling the 2620 Road Fire near Mt. Jupiter, west of Brinnon. It has burned 398 acres since it started on August 14. The fire is still just 8% contained.

Firefighters, supported by 415 resources including engines, helicopters, and water tenders, are focused on line construction and mop-up efforts. Erratic winds continue to challenge crews, but cooler temperatures are helping. A Temporary Flight restriction remains in place.
