PORT ANGELES – The Washington state Dept. of Ecology has prepared a status update on formal cleanup sites near Port Angeles Harbor. Formal sites are investigated and cleaned up under a legal agreement between Ecology and the Potentially Liable Person (PLP). The PLP is responsible for doing the investigation and cleanup.
The informational sheet includes brief updates on the following cleanup sites:
- Rayonier Mill
- Western Port Angeles Harbor
- K Ply
- Marine Trades Area
- Pettit Oil Company on the Tumwater Truck Route
and more.
Updates about the Port Angeles Natural Resource Damage Assessments for Rayonier Mill and Western Harbor are also included.
According to the reports, cleanup efforts at the Port Angeles Rayonier Mill (CSID 2270) site are progressing with a focus on addressing contaminants such as metals, PCBs, petroleum, and dioxins. A draft Interim Action Plan (IAP) identifying cleanup remedies was prepared, and a public comment period on the IAP and a legal agreement is anticipated in 2025.
The Western Port Angeles Harbor site (CSID 11907) also continues forward, with a draft Cleanup Action Plan (CAP) prepared, and public comments expected in 2025. Investigations at Terminals 5, 6 & 7 Uplands (CSID 15440) are ongoing, with sample results pending.
Additionally, cleanup construction at the K Ply site (CSID 28) is complete, but monitoring continues for residual contamination. Several other sites in the region, including the
Marine Trades Area and Unocal Bulk Plant, are in various stages of remedial investigation and planning, with public review periods expected for multiple sites in the coming years.
Ecology officials say there is no comment period open now, but when a comment period opens, they will notify the public.
