LOCAL SPORTS: Former PA Rider, PC Pirate Long making big impact in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, AK –In her first week with the University of Alaska Anchorage basketball team, former Roughrider and Pirate Millie Long has been named the Great Northern Athletic Conference Player of the Week. In two Seawolves wins over Simpson University, Long averaged 17.5 points, 7 assists, and 7 steals per game. She set a UAA record with 11 steals in her debut.

The Klahhane Gymnastics XCEL Bronze team, made up of 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds, placed first at the Harvest Fest meet in Mukilteo. Adrie McGuire posted the highest all-around score in the entire Bronze level session. Other state qualifiers include Penny Goodwin, Kinley Matthews, Aubrie Huisman, Regan Haugewood, Addie Brown, and Lucy Monaghan. Strong performances also came from Sasha Gmazel, who finished sixth in the vault, and Nora Peconaro, who placed 14th in the all-around.

The Klahhane XCEL Bronze team celebrated their first-place finish on the podium

The Port Angeles girls soccer team faces a tough challenge tonight as underdogs against Bainbridge in the second round of the district tournament. The Spartans, who led the Olympic League with a 14-0 record, outscored opponents 58-1. The Roughriders, who scored 40 goals and conceded 21, will need strong performances from top scorers if they hope to pull off an upset. Kedryn DeScala leads with 10 goals and 5 assists, followed by Teanna Clark with 10 goals and 3 assists. Ava Anne Sheahan has 6 goals, Mariah Traband has 5 goals and 5 assists, Lilly Anne Lancaster has 2 goals and 5 assists, and Pyper Alton, currently out with injury, has 3 assists. The Roughriders, who finished fourth in the Olympic League with an 8-6 record, will kick off at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

The Roughriders’ 200 Medley relay team of Brooke St. Luise, Amayah Nelson, Lizzy Shaw, and Danika Asgeirsson will be aiming for gold at the District swim meet in Auburn starting Friday.
