LOCAL SPORTS: Former local athletes excelling at next level

UNDATED — Former Roughrider swimmer Harper McGuire is having a strong early season with the University of Puget Sound Loggers swim team.

Against Simon Fraser University, McGuire placed 4th in the 200-yard freestyle, 5th in the 500-yard freestyle, and helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team secure 3rd place. Competing against Whitworth University, McGuire finished 5th in the 100-yard freestyle, 2nd in the 200-yard backstroke, and contributed to her team’s 1st place in the 400-yard relay.

Former Peninsula Pirate Ese Onakpoma is also off to a strong start at Arizona Christian University in Glendale, Arizona. Onakpoma has started all six games as a guard, leading the Firestorm to a 6-0 record while averaging 14 points per game.

Former Pirate Roosevelt Williams Jr. spent the past season playing for the Australian pro league’s NBL-1 team, Williton. Williams led Williton to a 16-9 record, averaging 10 points per game.

Javon Ervin is playing for NCAA D1 Mount Saint Mary’s University in Maryland

Another former Pirate, Javon Ervin, is now playing for Division I Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he’s averaging 4 points per game.

The University of Alaska Anchorage features two former Pirates: Malik Jackson and Millie Long. Jackson is averaging 12 minutes per game across five games, with 18 points and 3 steals. Former Roughrider and Pirate Millie Long has led the Seawolves to a 4-0 record, averaging 13 points per game while shooting 48% from the field, along with 16 assists and 20 steals.
