SEQUIM — Kathy Downer will retire from the Sequim City Council after tonight’s meeting, ending her term early.

Downer, a council member since 2022, announced her decision on Dec. 9, citing a desire to spend time with her 3-month-old grandchild and pursue other interests.

The 72-year-old retired nurse’s term was set to run through 2027. The process to fill her seat will likely include applications, public interviews, and council nominations. If no replacement is chosen within 90 days, Clallam County commissioners will appoint someone.

Downer joined the council as part of a group opposing controversial decisions by the prior council and won reelection in 2023 with nearly 73% of the vote.
