LOCAL SPORTS: Pirates, Wolves, and Red Devils Shine in Winter Sports Action; Key Matchups Ahead on KONP

PORT ANGELES — It’s peak season for high school and NWAC winter sports.

The Peninsula Pirates’ 3rd-ranked women’s basketball team knocked off Edmonds Saturday, 87-59.

Freshman Makena Patrick from Anaconda, Montana, had her best game of the season, leading the way for the Pirates with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Carliese O’Brien came off the bench to score 14 points. Shania Moanunu added 13 points, Lexi Mackey scored 12 points, and former Neah Bay Red Devil Ryana Moss contributed 11 points. The Pirates are 2-0 in conference play and 10-2 overall. They travel to Bellevue on Wednesday in a game that will be broadcast here on KONP Newsradio.

Freshman Makena Patrick, out of Anaconda, Montana, scored 17 points and pulled down 8 rebounds in the Pirates’ win over Edmonds.

The Pirate men got their offense going against Edmonds, scoring 91 points. Unfortunately, the Pirates’ defense couldn’t stop the Tritons, who scored 110 points.
Isaiah Lopez led the way for the Pirates with 27 points. Jaiden Blackmon scored 15, Antonio Odum and Paxton Heitsch each added 12 points, and Akeem Sulaiman contributed 11 points. The Pirates are 0-2 in conference play and 6-9 overall. They will face Bellevue on Wednesday.

Another game, another blowout for the state’s 2nd-ranked Sequim Wolves. The Wolves crushed North Kitsap Friday night, 74-46. The game was effectively over by halftime, with the Wolves up 43-18.
Sophomore Jericho Julmist scored 23 of his 27 points in the first half. Senior Ethan Melnick set the tone early by hitting two 3-point shots, energizing a raucous Wolves crowd into a frenzy.
Charlie Grider scored 10 points, and Mason Rapelje added 9 points. It was the Wolves’ first win over North Kitsap since the 2014-15 season. The 11-0 Wolves travel to Bremerton Tuesday night in a game you can hear here on KONP Newsradio.

KONP Newsradio broadcasters Bill Bates and Joe Gladfelter interviewed Wolves assistant coach Nikki Julmist after the 2nd-ranked Wolves buried North Kitsap.

Speaking of the Knights, they jumped out to a 25-6 lead over Port Angeles in the first quarter and never looked back, knocking off the Roughriders 66-52.
Sophomore Jalen Davis dominated the Roughriders with a triple-double: 34 points, 14 rebounds, and an amazing 18 steals.

Tonight, the Roughriders return to Neah Bay, where they were upset last year by the Red Devils, 57-55.
The Red Devils, now 8-2, are ranked #1 in the state but lost at 9-0 Tulalip Saturday night, 72-52.
The Red Devils are led by 5’9″ senior Tyler Swan, who averages 16 points per game (ppg) and 11 rebounds per game (rpg). Swan shoots 35% from the 3-point line.
Senior Makyah Chambers, standing at 5’4″, averages 12 ppg, shoots an impressive 36% from the 3-point line, and averages 4 steals per game. The Red Devils play tough defense, giving up just 48 points per game.
Tonight’s game will be broadcast here on KONP Newsradio with the Les Schwab Tires Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45. Tip-off is at 7:00.

In girls’ action, the Port Angeles Roughriders defeated Bremerton, 55-25. The Roughriders are 3-2 in league play and 6-6 overall.
The Sequim Wolves lost at North Kitsap, 54-23, Friday night.
On Saturday, the Wolves dropped a home game to Olympic, 45-42. Hailey Wagoner and Libby Turella each scored 10 points, and Taylor Heyting added 7 points. The Wolves are 1-5 in league play and 2-8 overall.

Wolves junior guard Kiley Winter, on the KONP Newsradio post-game show, talked about the tough 45-42 loss to Olympic. Meanwhile, promising 8th-grade basketball player Jordan Julmist discussed her upcoming basketball season.

In bowling action today, Sequim hosts North Mason at 3:00.

In wrestling, Roughrider wrestlers Bryelle Wopperer placed 1st, and Claire Berry placed 2nd at the Island Invite on Bainbridge Island.
