LOCAL SPORTS: Port Angeles Golf, Soccer, and Baseball Teams Kick Off Strong Season Starts

PORT ANGELES — The high school golf season is here, and Port Angeles golf coaches Mike DuPuis and Bob Anderson have plenty of talent on the greens to compete for league championships.

The Lady Roughriders defeated Kingston 224-285.
Claire Osterberg was the match medalist, shooting a 53. Mia Neff shot a 54, Malena Marquez shot a 55, Autumn Wilson Rowland shot a 62, Brenna Furnice shot a 67, and Izzy Spencer shot a 70.

It’s going to be a very competitive year for the Roughriders amongst themselves.

The Roughriders boys  got off to a hot start in Bremerton, outshooting the Knights 169-231.

Of course, the greatest name in high school golf, Sky Gelder, shot a course-best 41.
Cale Wentz was just one stroke behind, shooting a 42.
Austin Worthington, Max Gagnon, and Tate Alton all shot 43s, while Colby Charles finished with a 59.

The Roughriders will host the always-talented Sequim team tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

Boys Soccer

The Port Angeles Roughriders soccer team opened the season with a late come-from-behind 2-1 win at Bremerton.

The Knights scored in the 34th minute and led until the 74th minute when Caleb Lagrange scored on an unassisted goal. In the 78th minute, Kanyon Anderson delivered a great pass on a corner kick that was headed in by Jacob Weaver.

The Offensive Player of the Game was Caleb Lagrange. Defensive Players of the Game were Grant Butterworth and Sawyer Davis. The Transition Player of the Game was Kanyon Anderson.

Head Coach Chris Saari also praised his goalie, Gus Halberg, for an outstanding performance.

Baseball

The Roughriders baseball team opens the season today at Volunteer Park against Forks at 4:00 p.m.

Port Angeles pitcher Rylan Politika returns to a deep Roughriders pitching rotation. They open the season today against Forks.

College Basketball

Former Peninsula Pirate Ituau Tuissaula and her Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are just two wins away from making the NCAA Tournament.

The Jacks defeated Nicholls State 77-65 in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.
“Itu” played six minutes and pulled down a rebound.

Former Peninsula Pirate Ituau Tuisaula and her Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are two wins away from the NCAA Tournament.

The Jacks play Lamar today in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in a semifinal matchup.
