Restoration plans for Locomotive #4 to be presented at PA library

BY PEPPER FISHER

Port Angeles – The City of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and the North Olympic Peninsula Railroaders are hosting a restorethe4 event this Sunday at 3:00pm at the Port Angeles Library.

The 4, for those of you not familiar with it, is Rayonier Locomotive #4, one of only six remaining Willamette locomotives, which for years has been displayed on the corner of Chase Street and Lauridsen Boulevard in Port Angeles, and is now almost 100 years old.

The event will be led by local historian Steve Hauff, an expert on the Willamette logging locomotives. Hauff will also present the latest efforts to restore the 4 to its original glory, as well the plan to add two additional log cars and a caboose. Plans also include erecting a roof over the entire display and making additional improvements to the park.

Following the presentation, join the group in crossing the street to the park where the locomotive sits.  There will be volunteers onsite to answer questions and accept donations. Merchandise will also be on sale. This will also be one of the few times the gate will be open to allow up-close viewing access to Locomotive #4, so bring your camera.
