Port Angeles – Olympic National Park wilderness permits for the summer season, which is May 15 through October 15, will be available at 7:00am on Tuesday, April 15. All permits can be reserved online at Recreation.gov or by contacting the Wilderness Information Center at 360-565-2992. Due to expected high call volumes, email may be the best method of contact at OLYM_WIC@nps.gov.
Wilderness permits are required for all overnight trips in the backcountry. Day hikers do not need wilderness permits.
When planning itineraries, new and experienced adventurers should keep in mind:
- Some trailheads may be impacted by road construction. Check the alerts tabs on gov or the park website for the latest updates. If in doubt, reach out to the Wilderness Information Center.
- Snow lingers on high alpine trails well into the summer season. Make sure you’re selecting a route that matches your skillset and equipment.
- Bear-safe food storage is required for all areas. Borrow a bear cannister for free from the Wilderness Information Center.
- Itineraries should be shared with friends and family so they can contact park rangers if anything happens to your group.
- Unexpected events, like extreme weather or wildfire can derail trips. Stay flexible and be prepared to change plans.
- Olympic National Park plants and wildlife depend on you! Help protect them by packing out your trash and following Leave No Trace principles.
