LOCAL SPORTS: Former Roughriders Shine on the Track as Spring Sports Heat Up Across the Peninsula

UNDATED — Former Roughrider distance runners Max Baeder and Jack Gladfelter competed Friday night, April 11, in the Men’s 5K race at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon.

Baeder, representing Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, ran in the second heat and won a spirited race with a personal best time of 15:17.97, improving his previous mark by 35 seconds. He finished 16th overall in the 5K event.

Gladfelter, competing for Corban University in Salem, OR, raced in the first heat and finished third with a season-best time of 14:44.11. That performance currently ranks him 12th nationally among 5K runners in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).

Both athletes will compete again next Saturday—Baeder at the Puget Sound Invitational in Tacoma and Gladfelter at Lewis-Clark University in Portland.

In boys’ soccer action, the Port Angeles Roughriders shut out Steilacoom 4-0, continuing their impressive turnaround season. The Roughriders improved to 4-2 in Olympic League play and 6-3 overall.

Senior Matthew Miller scored a hat trick and added an assist, while Kanyon Anderson tallied one goal and two assists.

Head Coach Chris Saari praised senior goalkeeper Gus Halberg for recording his fourth shutout of the season. He also commended defenders Taihuan Lyle and Jackson Wyall for their strong defensive efforts.

The Roughriders host North Mason Tuesday night.

The Peninsula College Pirates women’s soccer team has signed Kasi Baker, a 5’7″ forward from Class 4A Graham-Kapowsin High School. Baker was a 2024 4A SPSL Second Team All-League selection.

In fastpitch softball, the Sequim Wolves host 6th-ranked North Kitsap tonight. The Vikings, who finished third in the state last season after defeating Port Angeles 18-11, return a young team following the graduation of 10 seniors.

Despite the turnover, North Kitsap remains the top-ranked team in the Olympic League. A major reason is the return of senior pitcher Reese Anderson, who has dominated the league and district play over the past three years.

Opponents may finally rest easy after Memorial Day weekend, when Anderson departs for Phoenix College, a national junior college in Phoenix, Arizona.

In baseball over the weekend, Sequim fell to River Ridge 6-1, while North Thurston defeated Port Angeles 4-0.

This afternoon in tennis, Sequim travels to Olympic and Port Angeles visits Bainbridge. Both matches start at 4:00 p.m.
