LOCAL SPORTS: North Kitsap Dominates in Fastpitch; Port Angeles Scores Big Wins Across the Board

SEQUIM — In girls fastpitch action, the state’s 6th-ranked North Kitsap Vikings lived up to their billing, cruising past Sequim 17-2 on Tuesday.

Vikings senior pitcher Reese Anderson was dominant, facing just 12 batters and striking out seven.

Sequim showed signs of life in the second inning when Hannah Giddings and Kylie Winter hit back-to-back singles, and Rilynn Whitehead drew a walk to load the bases. But Anderson struck out the side to end the threat.

The Wolves managed a brief rally in the fifth against North Kitsap’s relief pitcher. Mia Kirner doubled following walks by Whitehead, Mickey Green, and Riley Doig. Green and Whitehead scored in the inning.

North Kitsap All-State pitcher Reese Anderson appeared on the KONP Newsradio postgame show, where she talked about the challenges of competing in the always-tough Olympic League.

Sequim will travel to Bremerton on Thursday.

Port Angeles also earned a lopsided win, shutting out Bremerton 17-0.

In girls tennis, the Roughriders faced state powerhouse Bainbridge and were swept 7-0. Pyper Alton had one of the most competitive matches, falling 3-6, 1-6, while Audrey Rudd lost 3-6, 2-6. The Riders head to Kingston today; Sequim travels to Bremerton. Both matches begin at 4:00 p.m.\

The Roughrider track and field team had a strong showing at the Mount Tahoma Track Festival, which featured 24 to 32 of the state’s top athletes per event.

Boys results included:

  • Liam Wilson, 13th in the 200 meters
  • Easton Dempsey, 11th in the 800 meters
  • Henry Wendel, 14th in the 1600 meters
  • Justin McLarty, 17th in the 1600 meters
  • Finn Thompson, 12th in the 300-meter hurdles
  • 4×100 relay (Wilson, Logan Wilson, Kaiden Point, Hunter Eller), 8th place
  • 4×400 relay (Thompson, Point, Dempsey, Gregory Jordan), 6th place

Girls results included:

  • Faerin Tait: 3rd in the 200 meters, 1st in the 300-meter hurdles, and 2nd in the 100-meter hurdles
  • Storey Schmidt: 7th in the 400 meters
  • Leia Larson: 12th in the 1600 meters
  • Teanna Clark: 2nd in the javelin

The Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball team has signed 6’6″ power forward Tucker Williams from Monroe Catholic High School in Fairbanks, Alaska. Williams led the Rams to a 20-9 record and a state tournament berth this past March.

Coming up today in high school sports:

  • Baseball: Sequim travels to Olympic, Port Angeles visits North Kitsap. Both games begin at 4:15 p.m.
  • Soccer: Port Angeles hosts North Mason at 7:15 p.m.; Sequim travels to Kingston for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
  • Golf: Port Angeles heads to Bainbridge, and Sequim visits North Mason. Both matches tee off at 3:00 p.m.
