Port Angeles — The Clallam County Parks, Fair, & Facilities Department just announced a couple of important changes to services.
First, beginning in May, they’re going to discontinue the sale of bundled firewood at both the Salt Creek and Dungeness Recreation Area Campgrounds. Instead, campers will be directed to local sellers, where bundles typically cost about $5.00- $8.00.
Parks Director Don Crawford said that to cover their costs accurately, the county would need to increase the price of bundled firewood to $10.00, which he said is comparable to prices charged at state and federal campgrounds, and he’s not prepared to impose that cost on campers.
The other announcement is that by Tuesday, May 27, cashless “first-come, first-served” campsite registration kiosks will be activated at both the Salt Creek and Dungeness Recreation Area Campgrounds. The County’s innovation should be familiar to those who camp in Washington State Parks, the Olympic National Forest, and Olympic National Park.
The kiosks offer a convenient payment option for renting campsites designated as “first-come, first-served” at the two campgrounds. Users can also pay for other fees and services at the kiosks.
The County’s online campsite reservation system will still be available for those who want to reserve campsites more than seven days in advance, at clallamcountywa.gov/297/Camping.
