PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School Board considers a plan this week that would trim staffing levels next school year to help close a nearly $2 million budget shortfall.
Superintendent Marty Brewer says the “Reduced Educational Program,” would align staffing with expected enrollment of about 3,200 students, along with program needs and available funding.
So far, the district says all staff reductions have come through attrition — meaning resignations and retirements — with no layoffs. But the board is preparing for the possibility of deeper cuts, especially if federal funding for programs like Title I and special education is reduced.
If approved, the plan would eliminate the equivalent of 13 full-time teaching and support positions. That includes cuts at the elementary level, as well as at Port Angeles High School in areas such as CTE, social studies, Spanish, and NJROTC.
On the classified side, the district would cut 28 staff hours spread across custodial, communications, and office support positions.
The school board will take up the at its meeting this Thursday.
