Dozens File for Local Races in Clallam County as 2025 Election Season Begins

PORT ANGELES — The candidate filing period for Clallam County’s 2025 election cycle closed Friday, with dozens of candidates entering local races for city councils, school boards, the Port of Port Angeles, and hospital commissioners.

Two contested races will shape the future leadership of the Port of Port Angeles. In Commissioner District 1, incumbent Colleen McAleer will face challenger Nate Adkisson. In District 2, Allen Sawyer and Steven Burke will compete in the general election.

In Hospital District 2 (Olympic Medical Center), several commissioner races are set for November — except Commissioner Position 7, which drew four candidates and will head to a primary. Mic Sager, Laurie Force, and Penney Sanders remain active in the race after Corlene Eberle withdrew.

For Position 1, Ann Marie Henninger and Gerald Stephanz Jr. will face off in the general election. Position 4 will be a contest between Carleen Bensen and Tara B. Coffin after the withdrawals of Laurie Force and Bertha Cooper.

Port Angeles City Council has drawn crowded races. Council Position 1 will go to a primary with Gilbert Hall, James Taylor, and incumbent LaTrisha Suggs competing. Council Position 4 will also be on the primary ballot, with Ralph Davisson, Marolee “Mimi” Smith Dvorak, and incumbent Kate Dexter vying for the seat.

Meanwhile, Tyler Slater and Drew Schwab have both advanced to the general election for Council Position 2, and Mark Hodgson is unopposed in Position 3.

In Sequim, all City Council candidates have advanced directly to the general election. Kelly Burger, A. Pete Tjemsland, Rachel Anderson, Brandon Janisse, and Nicole Hartman are running for various positions with no opposition filed.

School board elections also show a mix of contested and uncontested races. In the Port Angeles School District, Director Position 1 drew four candidates — Kim Butler, Ruth Replogle, Ned Hammar, and Sarah Methner — and will appear on the primary ballot. For Position 2, Mary Hebert and Nancy Hamilton will face off in the general election.

In the Crescent School District, Sandy Middleton, Joey Currie, and Melinda Avrett are running unopposed for three different board positions.

The Sequim School District has Patrice Johnston running unopposed for Director District No. 2.

The primary election is scheduled for August 5, followed by the general election on November 4.
