LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders Host Playoff Opener Monday; Pirates Add Vegas Standout, Long Gets Extra Year

BY OLY ARCHIBALD

PORT ANGELES – As expected, the Port Angeles Roughriders baseball team will host a district playoff game Monday at Civic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

In a loser-out game, the Roughriders will face the 8-10 Eatonville Cruisers, the fifth-place team from the South Puget Sound League.

Port Angeles received a favorable draw in the upper bracket, avoiding a potential matchup with Bainbridge until later in the tournament.

A win on Monday would send the Roughriders to face Steilacoom on Tuesday. Steilacoom is the No. 2 team from the SPS League, a team Port Angeles defeated in last year’s district tournament. A possible semifinal opponent is Orting, the SPS League champions. The Roughriders beat Orting 14-3 two weeks ago on the road.

All Roughriders games will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio.

Senior third baseman Josiah Gooding was all smiles as he prepared for the district tournament.

The Sequim Wolves will travel to Olympic High School on Monday to face the Trojans at 4 p.m. in a loser-out game. The winner will play Bainbridge on Tuesday.

Madison Smith, a 5-foot-4 guard, played four years at Democracy Prep. The Blue Knights compiled a 44-9 conference record and a 77-22 overall record during her tenure.

As a sophomore, Smith helped lead the team to a 27-3 season and the Nevada 2A state championship, averaging 6 points per game. In her junior and senior seasons, after moving up to the 5A classification, the Knights reached the state championship game both years but fell short.

Smith also competed in track, recording a 13.9-second 100-meter dash and a 29.2-second 200-meter dash. She attended a Peninsula Pirates basketball game in February and was interviewed live on KONP Newsradio.
