Flags to Fly at Half-Staff Thursday for Peace Officers Memorial Day

PORT ANGELES  — If you notice flags flying at half-staff this Thursday, it’s in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. Governor Bob Ferguson has ordered all state agency buildings to lower their flags on May 15, from the start of the day until sunset or the close of business.

The day is set aside to honor the brave local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. It’s a solemn tradition observed nationwide and is part of National Police Week—a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by peace officers and their families.

Peace Officers Memorial Day was established back in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed it into law. Since then, it’s served as a powerful reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day to keep their communities safe.
