Former Roughrider to play for NCAA Division 1 Fresno State

BY PEPPER FISHER

Port Angeles – Multi-sport phenom and former Roughrider Millie Long broke some big news Thursday on KONP’s Todd Ortloff Show.

Long is back in town on a summer break from college. Her career as an athlete has continued to advance since high school, first playing both soccer and basketball at Peninsula College, then parlaying her two-sport play to Cal Poly Humboldt, then on to the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she led the basketball team in several stats to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Playing point guard in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, she was selected Defensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and made the West Region First Team.

But Long’s star continues to rise, as she was able to keep her college eligibility alive for one more year. On Thursday, she announced her next big move.

“So where’s Millie Long next year?” “Yeah, so I’m going to Fresno State next year, which is in the Mountain West. And it’s Division 1, so it’ll be really cool. And I don’t know if you guys wanted me to specify all that, but my coach at UAA, actually, Ryan McCarthy and his crew, all of them, they’re actually heading to Fresno as well. So, I’m following them there.”

During the broadcast, Long received a surprise call from her head coach, Ryan McCarthy.

“Millie had a lot of really good options in the portal. And for us, she was always kind of the crown jewel of the recruiting class from…at UAA. And then, definitely, for what we do, the point guard position is so important. And we just felt like, you know, it would be a really good fit if we could get her again. And we threw a little party when we signed Millie again. So, yeah, we’re really excited to have her.”
