LOCAL SPORTS: Gladfelter Earns Second All-American Nod; Roughrider Golfers Finish Season at State, PA Softball Opens Tourney Friday

UNDATED — Former Port Angeles Roughrider long-distance runner Jack Gladfelter is an NAIA All-American once again. Now a sophomore at Corban University, Gladfelter earned All-American honors for the second time in the 2024-25 school year after finishing sixth in the men’s 10,000-meter run Thursday night in Marion, Indiana.

At the 2A State Golf Tournament in Tumwater, senior Claire Osterberg wrapped up her fourth state appearance with a second-day score of 95 to place 34th overall. Teammates Mia Neff shot a 100 for 50th place, while Autumn Wilson Rowland carded a 109 to finish 60th.

Retiring girls golf coach Mike DuPuis praised his three state qualifiers. “The goal for these three seniors at the beginning of the year was to earn a trip to state — which is exactly what they did, and I could not be prouder.”

On the boys’ side, Roughrider coach Bob Anderson said his team had a blast competing at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis. Cale Wentz led the Riders with a 21st-place finish, and Austin Worthington came in 38th.

Looking ahead, Peninsula College will host youth basketball camps July 7–11 and August 4–8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The camps are open to kids ages 7 to 13, with a cost of $100 per session.

In softball, the 2A State Fastpitch Tournament opens tomorrow in Selah. Port Angeles will play one of the first games of the tourney taking on Cedercrest Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. Other Olympic League teams will be in action early:

  • Olympic vs. Ephrata at 11:00 a.m.
  • Kingston vs. Aberdeen at 11:00 a.m.

The double play tandem of shortstop Morgan Politika and second baseman Kennedy Rognlien has helped the Roughriders earn a No. 3 seed in the 2A State Tournament.

Top-seeded Tumwater returns nearly its entire starting lineup from last year’s runner-up team that lost to Sedro-Woolley in the title game. Sedro-Woolley, meanwhile, moves up to the 3A bracket this year, where they’re seeded fourth — a welcome shift for 2A contenders.
