Port Angeles – We have an update on progress of the planned Marine Discovery Center on the Port Angeles waterfront.

The capital budget bill Governor Ferguson signed last week includes $1 million in funding for the construction of the new Center. An email from Feiro Marine Life Center staff on Friday says that it means the Center has reached 72% of the funds needed to complete construction. That leaves $2.5 million more in pledges and donations needed this year in order to proceed with construction.

In the meantime, Krazan & Associates and HDR Archeology have begun working on the site, collecting soils analysis data and evaluating the samples for any cultural materials. Center staff expects to have those reports within the next month on the team’s analysis.

The new center is a collaboration between Feiro Marine Life Center and the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. The project aims to educate thousands of visitors and tell our region’s story by tracing waterways from mountains to estuary to deep ocean, revealing the marine life that lives in the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Salish Sea.
