Sequim man’s body recovered two weeks after kayak tragedy

Sequim — We can now confirm that the body of Ty Coone of Sequim was recovered from the water near Dungeness Spit, near where he went missing on May 14.

His mother, Michele Scott Duncan, confirmed on social media that the 21-year-old’s body was recovered on Sunday, June 1, though the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is still awaiting a coroner’s report to make it official.

Coone, who was fishing on his kayak that Tuesday afternoon near Dungeness Bay, placed a 911 call around 4:30pm saying that he was “in distress and possibly drowning,” according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

GPS coordinates placed Coone in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, north of Cline Spit. At the time Coone was fishing, a Small Craft Advisory was in effect.

The Coast Guard launched a search which resulted in locating his kayak only. The search was called off after 16 hours.

The family held a memorial service for Coone on Saturday, May 31.
