Clallam County burn restrictions kick in on July 1

Port Angeles – County-wide summer burn restrictions are coming next Tuesday, July 1.

Burn Restrictions will run through October 1, unless conditions warrant a total burn ban. The Burn Restriction applies to all outdoor burning except recreational fires used for pleasure, ceremonial, cooking or similar purposes.

Recreational fires are limited to 3-feet in diameter and 2-feet in height.

Clallam County Fire Marshal George Bailey said in his announcement Friday, “We have been fortunate to have had as much precipitation this spring to keep the fire risk low to moderate throughout the county. However, we have had multiple fire responses throughout the month of June in the East end of the county.”

Bailey singled out propane weed burners as a particular nuisance, saying they caused over 1/3 of the responses. As such they are prohibited from use during the burn ban.

Fires for debris disposal are not legal under any circumstances and are not considered recreational.

Bailey ended his announcement with the words, “Be smart and stay safe out there.”
