Port Angeles – The application period has begun for any registered Port Angeles voter to be the next member of the City Council.
Council Member Brendan Meyer submitted his resignation to the City Council, effective June 30, and on Tuesday at their regular meeting, the Council officially opened the appointment process to begin on Wednesday, July 2. State law provides that City Council must appoint a qualified person to fill the vacant position within 90 days.
The application window closes at 4:00pm on August 4. Here’s City Manager Nathan West.
“So you’ve got a little bit over a month to submit. If you have a desire to be on Council and apply, you have a little bit over a month to think about the magnitude of that decision, what it means to you, the sacrifices it may mean to your family and your daily life. And then, on August 19th Council will actually select the finalists to be interviewed. And then, the hope is that on September 2, we will actually see Council interview those finalists and make a final decision.”
The person appointed to Position No. 7 will take office immediately and serve until the results of the November 2027 General Election are certified.
“You are appointed temporarily until the next general election. And for municipalities, including our own, that general election occurs on the odd years. So, effectively, you’ll be in the office and then have to run for re-election on the next odd year, effectively 2027, for a more permanent office position.”
To apply, candidates are asked to submit an application, letter of intent, and resume. Those interested can get more information at cityofpa.us/CityCouncilVacancy
