Clallam County bans all outdoor burning

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County has upgraded its burn restrictions to a full burn ban as of July 14, citing dangerously low humidity and extreme heat forecasts for the coming days.

The new restrictions apply to all areas in unincorporated Clallam County, including county-controlled campgrounds. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including campfires, bonfires, briquette barbecues, yard debris burning, trash disposal, land clearing, weed abatement, and agricultural burning.

Propane, gas, and pellet appliances are still allowed but must be used on non-flammable surfaces and kept at least five feet from flammable vegetation.

This change does not apply to campgrounds within Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest, which are under federal and state jurisdiction.

The Clallam County Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to take proactive steps to reduce wildfire risk. That includes creating and maintaining at least 30 feet of defensible space around homes and buildings to help protect property and assist firefighters in case of wildfire.
