Busy Day for Clallam 2: Crews Respond to Serious Bike Crash, Brush Fire

PORT ANGELES — Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue had a busy day Wednesday, responding to a serious bike crash, a brush fire, and several medical calls.

Around 2:30 p.m., crews were called to the Spruce Railroad Trail near Camp David Jr. for a cyclist injured in a remote area. With help from Olympic National Park rangers, they reached the woman and began treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, a helicopter from Airlift Northwest landed on Highway 101 near Sol Duc Road. The highway was shut down for about 45 minutes while crews brought the patient out. She was flown to Harborview Medical Center just after 4 p.m.

While that was happening, Port Angeles Fire and Olympic Ambulance helped handle several other calls in the district.

Then around 6:45 p.m., crews were dispatched to a smoke report near Baker Farm Road. They spotted a large smoke column and upgraded it to a brush fire. About 1.5 acres were burning on a slope on DNR land. Clallam 2, with help from Port Angeles Fire and DNR crews, was able to stop the fire’s spread. It was turned over to DNR for final cleanup just after 9 p.m.
