Clallam County Region Lands $1 Million for Salmon Habitat and Flood Safety Projects

PORT ANGELES — Project in Clallam County will receive over $1 million in state grants for two major restoration projects aimed at improving salmon habitat and reducing flood risks.

The funding comes from the Washington Coast Restoration and Resiliency Initiative, created by the Legislature in 2015 to protect coastal ecosystems, support jobs, and reduce environmental hazards.

The Wild Salmon Center was awarded $451,602 to remove outdated fish barriers and restore natural flow in the Dickey River basin. Structures installed decades ago are now blocking salmon passage and degrading habitat.

The Quileute Tribe will receive $590,932 to develop engineering designs for a project on the lower Bogachiel River. The work will improve salmon habitat, reconnect the floodplain, and address flooding that threatens State Route 110.

Clallam was one of several coastal counties awarded grants in the latest round, which funded just over one-third of the $27 million in total project requests.
