Clallam County Sheriff issues statement following tanker truck crash

Port Angeles – On Friday, July 18, 2025, at around 1008 hours, a Petro Fuel tanker truck pulling a tanker trailer went off the roadway on Highway 101 near mile marker 238.7. The truck went down the embankment near the Indian Creek bridge and overturned into Indian Creek.

Washington State Patrol will be handling the accident investigation. Hwy 101 is currently closed to local traffic only, between the Hwy 112 junction and East Beach Road. There is no current estimate on when the roadway will reopen.

At this time, multiple agencies are on scene to mitigate the effects from fuel leaking from the tanker into Indian Creek, which is a tributary to the Elwha River. The Washington State Department of Ecology is on scene and will be the primary agency coordinating the hazmat spill response.

The Washington State Department of Health provided the following restrictions for the waterways downstream from the spill location:

• Do not enter or fish from the closed/boomed zone.
• Do not enter or fish from sheening areas.
• Do not eat fish that is oiled or smells oily.
• Do not touch or eat dead fish.

Additionally, this has caused the temporary closure of the City of Port Angeles and Dry Creek municipal water sources. Water usage restrictions are currently in place. Per the City
of Port Angeles, City staff are closely monitoring the City’s water supply and working closely with the Department of Ecology to determine appropriate next steps. They said they
will provide updates as additional information becomes available. Please monitor the City website for updates.

More information will be provided as the investigation and response continues.
